If you're thinking about launching a skincare brand, this is the first question you ask — and the hardest one to get a straight answer to. Most manufacturers won't give you numbers until you're deep in a sales process. We're going to do it differently.
Simplicity Filling Systems is a contract manufacturer in Sunrise, Florida. We've spent 18+ years filling, labeling, and packaging private-label skincare in our GMP facility. Here's how pricing actually works — and what drives your number up or down.
The short answer
There's no single price for "a skincare line," because every product is quoted on its own specs: the formula, the packaging, the quantity. What we can tell you is exactly how that quote gets built — and why some founders pay far less than they expected while others get blindsided. It comes down to five cost layers.
What you're paying for (the real cost stack)
A finished, shelf-ready product has five cost layers. Understanding them is the difference between a quote that makes sense and one that blindsides you.
1. The formula
This is your biggest variable. You have two paths:
- Stock/private-label formulas: proven, ready-to-fill bases (a vitamin C serum base, a shea body butter base, a foaming cleanser base). You pick it, we fill it, your label goes on. Lowest cost, fastest to market.
- Custom formulation: built from scratch to your spec. More R&D cost up front, but it's yours.
Most first-time founders start with stock formulas. It's the fastest way to test whether your brand sells before you invest in custom development.
2. The packaging (bottles, jars, caps, pumps)
Packaging is the silent budget-killer. A standard PET bottle with a disc cap costs a fraction of a frosted-glass bottle with a custom airless pump — and the difference multiplies across every unit. Fancy packaging can easily cost more than the formula inside it.
Rule of thumb from our floor: pick packaging that looks premium on the shelf but doesn't eat your margin. Your manufacturer should be honest with you about which components drive cost — if they aren't, that's a red flag.
3. The fill
This is our world. Filling is priced per unit and depends on the product type (liquids, creams, gels, and oils all fill differently), the container, and the volume. Consistency matters here — an uneven fill run means some bottles light and some overfilled, and you're paying for every unit either way. Calibrated equipment and per-formula dial-in is what keeps your cost-per-unit predictable.
4. Labeling and finishing
Pressure-sensitive labels, shrink sleeves, induction seals, boxes — the finishing steps that make a product retail-ready. These are per-unit costs that add up fast at scale, which is exactly why they should be quoted per unit, not buried in a lump sum.

5. Prep and fulfillment (if you're selling on Amazon)
If you're selling through Amazon FBA, there's a whole second cost stack: heat-sealed poly bags, neck sleeves, FBA carton labels, boxes built to spec. Miss a requirement and your shipment gets rejected at the dock.
Every brand's prep requirements are different, so this is always a custom quote — sized to your products, your volumes, and what Amazon requires of your specific listings. We handle the full prep workflow in-house. And the price-match promise applies here too: have a comparable written quote from another prep provider? Show it to us — we'll match it or beat it.
What drives your cost up (and how to keep it down)
- Order quantity. The single biggest lever. Per-unit costs drop as volume rises because setup, calibration, and changeover get spread across more units.
- Packaging choices. Standard components beat custom tooling on cost every time — especially for a first run.
- Product complexity. A simple oil serum fills faster and cheaper than a multi-phase cream with three packaging components.
- Number of SKUs. Every new SKU means new setup, new labels, new QC. Launching with one hero product is cheaper than launching with six — and it's better business too. Prove one sells, then expand.
How to get a real number for your product
Forget ballpark math. The only quote that matters is one built on your actual specs: your formula type, your packaging, your quantity.
We built our Quote Builder for exactly this — plug in your product details and get an instant online quote. No sales call, no waiting around, no "call for pricing" wall. And the price-match promise stands: have a comparable written quote from another manufacturer? Show it to us — we'll match it or beat it.
Who we work with
A quick note on fit, since it matters: we work with small runs, first-time founders, and startups — not just established brands. If you're launching your first product and wondering whether you're "big enough" for a manufacturer, you are. And if you're already selling and ready to scale, we're built for that too — same facility, same standards, larger runs.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a huge minimum order to start a skincare line? Minimums vary by product, packaging, and component availability. Smaller starter runs are common in private label — the right move is to quote your actual specs rather than assume you're too small.
How long does manufacturing take? Timelines depend on the formula (stock vs. custom), packaging lead times, and current production scheduling. Stock-formula runs move fastest. Ask for a timeline with your quote — any manufacturer who won't give you one is telling you something.
Can I start with one product? Yes — and you should. One hero product keeps your costs down, simplifies your launch, and tells you whether your brand has legs before you invest in a full line.
What's the difference between private label and contract manufacturing? Private label usually means filling a proven stock formula with your branding. Contract manufacturing is broader — it can include custom formulation, unique packaging, and full turnkey production. We do both.
The bottom line
Manufacturing a skincare line costs what your specs say it costs — and any manufacturer worth working with will show you the math. Start with a stock formula, keep packaging smart, launch one product, and get your quote in writing.
