Amazon FBA Prep for Beauty Brands: What Amazon Actually Requires

Amazon FBA prep for beauty brands

You made the product. Now Amazon has to accept it — and Amazon's receiving docks reject thousands of beauty shipments a year for prep mistakes. Most of them are avoidable if you know the requirements before you ship.

Here's what FBA prep actually involves for beauty and skincare brands, and how to get it right the first time.

What is FBA prep?

"Prep" is everything Amazon requires you to do to your products before they'll accept them into a fulfillment center: bagging, labeling, bundling, boxing to spec. Amazon doesn't prep your products for you (their optional prep service is limited and pricey) — it arrives ready or it gets rejected.

For beauty products, prep is stricter than for most categories. Liquids leak, jars break, and anything meltable is a problem in a hot warehouse.

The core requirements

Poly bagging with suffocation warnings

Most beauty units need individual poly bags. The rules that trip people up:

  • Bags must be transparent, sealed, and have a suffocation warning printed on them (or a separate warning label applied)
  • The warning has to meet specific size and placement requirements
  • The bag can't have holes or openings beyond what's allowed

This applies per unit — every single bottle, jar, or tube.

FBA product labels (X00 barcodes)

Every unit needs an scannable FBA label with its X00 identifier, placed so it doesn't cover other barcodes or required product information. If your packaging already has a UPC, the FBA label goes over it — Amazon scans their label, not yours.

Expiration dates

Anything consumable or with a shelf life — which covers most skincare — needs a visible expiration or "best by" date on both the unit and the outer carton. Lot codes help too. Amazon will not guess for you.

Leak and breakage protection

Liquids, creams, and gels need protection against leaking in transit and in the warehouse. That means sealed caps, induction seals where appropriate, and packaging that survives a conveyor belt. Glass containers need extra cushioning. If your product arrives leaking, the whole shipment can be flagged.

Carton requirements

Master cartons need FBA carton labels, can't exceed weight limits, and must be packed so units don't shift. Mixed-SKU cartons have their own labeling rules. One mislabeled carton can hold up an entire shipment at receiving.

The mistakes that get beauty shipments rejected

From what we've seen come through our prep operation:

  1. Missing suffocation warnings — the single most common rejection. The bags are right; the warning is missing or too small.
  2. Labels over the wrong barcode — or labels that peel, smudge, or won't scan.
  3. No expiration date on dated products.
  4. Meltables shipped in summer without accounting for heat — balms and butters arriving as liquid.
  5. Cartons that don't match the shipment plan — quantities or labels that disagree with what Amazon expects.

Every one of these is a prep problem, not a product problem. Your formula can be perfect and still get turned away at the dock.

Why brands outsource prep

You can do prep yourself — plenty of small sellers start that way, bagging and labeling at the kitchen table. It stops making sense fast:

  • Time. A thousand units of bag-label-seal work eats days.
  • Consistency. Amazon's requirements are exact. One tired mispack in a hundred units can trigger a receiving problem.
  • Scale. Your 500-unit launch fits on a table. Your 10,000-unit reorder doesn't.
  • Co-location. When your manufacturer preps in-house, product goes from the fill line to prep to Amazon without an extra freight leg in between.

What custom-quoted prep looks like

Every brand's prep is different — different products, different volumes, different Amazon requirements per listing. That's why prep is always custom-quoted, not menu-priced. A serious prep quote is built on your actual specs: unit count, bag and label requirements, carton specs, and where it's shipping.

And the same rule as manufacturing applies: have a comparable written quote from another prep provider? Show it to us — we'll match it or beat it.

Frequently asked questions

Can my manufacturer handle FBA prep too? If they're set up for it, yes — and it's the smoothest option. Product moves from production to prep under one roof. Ask whether prep is in-house or outsourced before you commit.

Does Amazon offer prep services directly? Amazon has an optional prep service, but it's limited in what it covers and it's priced accordingly. Most beauty brands use their manufacturer or a dedicated prep center.

What happens if my shipment gets rejected? Amazon flags the receiving problem, and you either fix and resend or dispose. Either way it costs time and money — which is why getting prep right before shipping matters more than fixing it after.

Do I need prep for every Amazon shipment? Every FBA shipment, yes. Requirements apply per unit and per carton, every time.

The bottom line

FBA prep isn't glamorous, but it's the gate between your product and Amazon's customers. Get the bags, warnings, labels, dates, and cartons right — or work with someone who does it every day — and your shipments sail through receiving while competitors' sit in problem queues.
